Studio E Silent Sports Bike Physics Dark Navy

Silent Sports Bike Physics Dark Navy
Studio E Silent Sports Bike Physics Dark Navy

Fabric Name- Silent Sports Bike Physics Dark Navy designed by Judy Gauthier for Studio E.

Material- 100% Cotton Fabric

Background Color- Navy Blue

Theme- Science

Description:

Bike Physics is part of the Silent Sports collection by Judy Gauthier for Studio E. There are gears and bicycles scattered throughout the design, along with the physics of air drag and how a bicycle works.

The picture of the white bicycle describes the different parts of the bike in terms of physics: The handlebar levers make the front wheel easier to turn. The friction brakes turn energy into heat. The frame divides the rider’s weight between the wheels. Large wheels multiply pedaling speed. Gears linked by a chain increase speed or pedaling force. The pedal cranks increase pedaling force. The spokes share the rider’s weight evenly on the tires.

The graph with many sloping lines illustrates how a rider’s position on a bicycle changes speed relative to the same horse power. Sitting straight up on a bike increases your frontal area, which increases air drag and slows you down relative to pedaling at the same power while leaning over the handle bars. Less air drag equals higher velocity given the same power.

The pattern also has calculations for overcoming air drag (resistance) in still air or in a headwind, and a diagram of the center of mass of a rider on a bicycle.

This is a great design for people who love bicycle racing and physics. Science is fun!

Teacher Appreciation Day 2022

Geekery Scientifically Speaking Multi Albus
RJR Geekery Scientifically Speaking Multi Albus

Teacher Appreciation Day is May 3, 2022. My favorite teachers were always my math and science teachers. I am honoring them today with the Scientifically Speaking Multi Albus fabric design from the Geekery collection by Sue Marsh for RJR Fabrics. It features classic math and science icons from Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Day!

Studio E Planetary Missions Graphics and Formulas

Planetary Missions Graphics and Formulas
Studio e Planetary Missions Graphics and Formulas

Fabric Name- Planetary Missions Graphics and Formulas designed by Studio E Fabrics.

Material- 100% Cotton Fabric

Background Color- Black

Theme- Science, Outer Space

Description:

Engineers Week runs from February 20-26, 2022, and today we are sharing this Planetary Missions design from Studio E Fabrics. This design features aerodynamic forces and calculations related to flying, concentrating on escaping Earth’s gravity and flying in outer space.

The red letter section describes Vertical Ascent and the white letter section describes Vertical Descent. Both of these sections contain calculations to explain ballistic flight, the motion of a flying ball with drag.

The equations surrounding the right triangle describe the Lift to Drag Ratio, the balance of forces on a descending Wright Glider.

The yellow letter section shows the equation for the Law of Gravity, along with the constants for the mass of the Earth, the radius of the Earth, and the universal gravitation constant.

The orange letters under the rocket show the velocity effects on aerodynamic forces. Double the velocity, quadruple the lift and quadruple the drag.

The Solar System graphic shows the shape of the orbits of the planets around the Sun, along with the orbits of some comets and asteroids.

The Earth, Venus, Sun diagram doesn’t have any calculations associated with it. This diagram is often shown when explaining how the Astronomical Unit was first determined. One Astronomical Unit (AU) is the distance from the Earth to the Sun, and it was first calculated using geometry and the transit of Venus.

There is a lot of great science on this pattern. I hope you learned something new today. If you would like more information, visit NASA’s Glenn Research Center to see more detailed explanations of these formulas.

Happy Engineers Week! Science is fun!

Northcott Big Bang Fabric

I am so excited about this new science and math fabric from Northcott Studio!

Northcott Big Bang Main

Fabric Name- Big Bang (Main Design)- by Deborah Edwards for Northcott Studio

Material- 100% cotton fabric

Background color- Navy Blue

Theme- Science and Math

Description:

Big Bang is packed with colorful science and math icons on a navy blue background. It covers chemistry, physics, biology and math in a fun and educational way. This fabric would be great in a science classroom. Take a look at all the great things in this design:

“Mathematics- the study of numbers, structure, space and change”. The math icons include a ruler, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division signs, a set square (triangle ruler), a sine wave, pie chart, the pi symbol, a square root sign, a triangular prism, cylinder, cube, pencil, X+Y=, 90° and the word Equations.

“Physics- the study of matter, energy and the interaction between them.” The words Einstein, Electricity and Magnetism are featured here. There is a light bulb and a horseshoe shaped magnet with waves above it. The VIR triangle is for Ohm’s Law: Voltage = Current x Resistance. A small white notebook shows the equations E = mc² and V = I x R.

“Biology- the study of life and living organisms.” Biology is represented by a microscope and a leaf.

“Chemistry- the study of properties of, and interactions between, matter and energy.” The elements Magnesium, Helium, Carbon and Oxygen are displayed in hexagons. There is a ring stand holding a flask over a Bunsen burner, a round bottom flask with a green liquid, a test tube rack holding tubes of various color liquids, and single test tubes with bubbling green liquid. There are several ball and stick molecules, beakers and atomic rings. The beaker has the word Beaker over it. Carbon dioxide and water are written here as CO² and H²O. They should be written as CO2 and H2O. Finally, the words Chemical Bonds are written in cursive.

A few things didn’t fit into a particular category: a stack of books and the words Science, Discover, Learn and Experiment.

This fabric is great! It is so colorful and fun, and educational at the same time. Check out the bag I made with this fabric here.

Science is fun! Get out there and discover, learn and experiment!
