In the Beginning Chromatics Aqua

Chromatics Aqua
In the Beginning Chromatics Aqua

Fabric Name- Chromatics Aqua designed for In the Beginning Fabrics

Material- 100% Cotton Fabric

Background Color- Aqua

Theme- Science

Description:

The Chromatics design from In the Beginning Fabrics features the chemical structures of the four DNA nitrogenous bases: adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), and thymine (T). Each of these bases combine with a sugar and a phosphate to form a unit of DNA called a nucleotide. To form the double helical structure of DNA, adenine binds to thymine, and cytosine binds to guanine. Cytosine and thymine are the single ring structures, called pyrimidines. In the image for the fabric, thymine is the single ring structure with two double bonded oxygens (O) [bottom row, center]. Adenine and guanine are the double ring structures, called purines. In the fabric image, guanine is the double ring structure with the double bonded oxygen (O) [top row, center]. For more information, please look up DNA base pairing, DNA structure and DNA replication.

This pattern is perfect for a geneticist or a biochemist. I hope you learned something new today! Science is fun!

Studio E Monster Lab DNA Navy

Monster Lab DNA Navy
Studio e Monster Lab DNA Navy

Fabric Name- Monster Lab DNA Navy designed by Dana Saulnier for Studio E Fabrics.

Material- 100% cotton fabric

Background color- Blue

Theme- Science

Description:

The DNA pattern of the Monster Lab Collection from Studio E is a lesson in cell biology. The big blobs in the design are actually cells, the basic building blocks of all living things. The large blob inside the cells is the nucleus. The cell nucleus is where you find your DNA. If you look carefully at the background of the fabric, you might notice some X’s. I think they are supposed to represent chromosomes. Chromosomes are very long strands of DNA. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes containing all of our genes. You inherit one of each pair of chromosomes from your mother, and the other from your father. This is an oversimplified explanation of genetics. If you would like to know more, do some research on mitosis and meiosis.

Getting back to the fabric description: There are strands of DNA both inside and outside of test tubes and atoms scattered in between. Throughout the pattern there are words in light blue: DNA, Molecule, Scientist, Atom, Genes, and Nucleus.

I hope you enjoy this pattern as much as I do. Science is fun!

Medical Laboratory Professionals Week

Monster Lab DNA

April 21-27, 2019 is Medical Laboratory Professionals Week.

So in honor of Lab Week, I thought I’d share this science fabric by Studio e. It’s called Monster Lab DNA by Dana Saulnier of The Patterned Peacock. There are cells, strands of DNA, tubes of DNA, and atomic rings. The words Scientist, Genes, Atom, DNA, Nucleus and Molecules are scattered throughout the pattern. If you look closely at the background, you can see X’s, which are chromosomes. I think this pattern is very fitting for a medical laboratory.

Check out the bag I made with this fabric here.

Happy Lab Week to all the Medical Laboratory Professionals out there!
