Fabric Name- Little Genius Chemistry White by Deborah Edwards for Northcott Fabrics

Material- 100% Cotton Fabric

Background Color- White

Theme- Science

Description:

The Little Genius Chemistry design by Deborah Edwards for Northcott Fabrics is full of fun science facts. There are colorful science icons on a white background including magnets, test tubes, microscopes, flasks, light bulbs, DNA, atoms, molecules, chemical elements (Hydrogen, Helium, Carbon, Oxygen, and Nitrogen), a solid/liquid/gas diagram, and magnifying glasses. Between each of the images there are scientific words and facts to teach young scientists:

DNA holds the code for every cell in your body.

Electricity is a form of energy and it occurs in nature. It can be made from wind, water and sunlight.

Hydrogen is the lightest , simplest and most commonly found chemical element in the Universe.

Carbon is found in the Earth’s atmosphere in the form of Carbon Dioxide, CO2.

Because Helium is lighter than air, it is often used to fill balloons and make them float.

Oxygen is essential to human life. It is in the air we breathe and the water we drink.

Nitrogen is present in all living things including the human body and plants.

Light travels very, very fast. The speed of light is around 186,000 miles per second.

Atoms are the basic building blocks of ordinary matter. Atoms are made of particles called protons, electrons and neutrons.

All living organisms on earth are divided into cells. Cells can only be seen under a microscope.

Magnets produce magnetic fields that attract or repel objects.

H2O is the chemical symbol for water.

Albert Einstein was a very famous scientist born in 1879. He came up with the famous equation E=mc2.

Experiments are fun!

The larger scientific words scattered throughout the pattern are: Atom, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Energy, Electrons, Magnetism, Science, Theory, Gravity, Einstein, Look Closer, DNA, Test Tubes, Light, Force, Motion, Microscope, Solid, Liquid, and Gas.

This fabric pattern is very educational. I think the colorful pictures and quick facts will keep kids coming back to discover new ideas. Science is fun!

Insect lovers will enjoy this Bug City Beetles design from Ella Blue Fabrics. There are many educational facts about insects along with colorful green and orange drawings of beetles, spiders, flies, and ticks. Below are the facts listed on the design, along with explanations that I have added.

Spiders- an eight-legged arachnid with an unsegmented body consisting of a fused head and thorax.

Insect- a small arthropod animal that has six legs and generally one or two pairs of wings.

Entomology- the branch of zoology concerned with the study of insects.

Arthropod- the phylum for insects and spiders.

Insecta- any of a class of arthropods.

Family Coccinellidae- ladybugs

Beetle- genera Scarabaeus, Canthon, Copris, or Phanaeus.

Dipteran flies- true flies

Culicidae- mosquitoes

Taxonomic rank is: Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. Beetles are: Domain Eukaryota, Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Arthropoda, Class Insecta, Order Coleoptera, many families including Coccinellidae, and some genera (the plural form of genus) are Scarabaeus, Canthon, Copris and Phanaeus.

Studio E Monster Lab DNA Navy

Monster Lab DNA Navy
Studio e Monster Lab DNA Navy

Fabric Name- Monster Lab DNA Navy designed by Dana Saulnier for Studio E Fabrics.

Material- 100% cotton fabric

Background color- Blue

Theme- Science

Description:

The DNA pattern of the Monster Lab Collection from Studio E is a lesson in cell biology. The big blobs in the design are actually cells, the basic building blocks of all living things. The large blob inside the cells is the nucleus. The cell nucleus is where you find your DNA. If you look carefully at the background of the fabric, you might notice some X’s. I think they are supposed to represent chromosomes. Chromosomes are very long strands of DNA. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes containing all of our genes. You inherit one of each pair of chromosomes from your mother, and the other from your father. This is an oversimplified explanation of genetics. If you would like to know more, do some research on mitosis and meiosis.

Getting back to the fabric description: There are strands of DNA both inside and outside of test tubes and atoms scattered in between. Throughout the pattern there are words in light blue: DNA, Molecule, Scientist, Atom, Genes, and Nucleus.

I hope you enjoy this pattern as much as I do. Science is fun!

Material- 100% cotton fabric

Background color- Navy Blue

Theme- Science

Description:

The 24-inch panel from Studio E’s Geek Chic collection contains 15 different squares on a navy blue background. There are three chemical elements: Zinc (Zn), Magnesium (Mg), and Aluminum (Al). One square has a bubbling red round bottom flask with a hexagonal chemical structure on the side. The word Science is the focus of another square containing electrons floating around a nucleus. There is a microscope with the chemical structure for Guanine, one of the 4 nucleotides that make up DNA. The square that says Chemistry also contains an atomic ring and an Erlenmeyer flask with a blue bubbling liquid. H2CO is formaldehyde. It is pictured with a graduated cylinder with yellow liquid, and two test tubes, one yellow and one orange. The square that says Molecule has a magnifying glass and the chemical structure for caffeine. There is a light bulb with a gear in the center and more atomic rings around it. Another square shows an Erlenmeyer flask with blue liquid on a yellow background. A test tube with light blue liquid is being poured into the flask. There are also two ball and stick models over the flask. There is a ball and stick model of a molecule on a square with a red background. A ring stand is holding a round bottom flask with a green liquid over a flame in another square. H2SO4 is sulfuric acid. It is featured on a square with a beaker with orange liquid transferring liquid to another container using a red coiled tube. The final square features a globe on a sky blue background. The panel is framed on either side with 10 chemical elements in smaller squares: Chlorine (Cl), Boron (B), Silicon (Si), Zinc (Zn), Ruthenium (Ru), Barium (Ba), Aluminum (Al), Magnesium (Mg), Strontium (Sr), and Sulfur (S).
